Whether it’s the cute golden retriever or Siamese cat, it’s not surprising that cats and dogs are the most popular pets in the United States. According to pet keen, the pet information website contains articles from veterinarians, animal trainers and pet psychologists. Dogs are the most popular pets and can be found in 69 million American homes. With just a few claws, cats can be found in about 45 million homes across the country.

However, there are other rare pets, from your neighbor’s guinea pig to your attention’s instagram account dedicated to someone’s pet pig. In addition to cats and dogs, the most popular pets include small pets such as rabbits and mice, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians, according to data provided to Yahoo life by online pet products retailer and pharmacy chewy.

The most popular pets are not cats and dogs

According to chewy, small pets – rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chipmunks, mice and sugar gliders – are the most popular pets in 45 states and Washington, D.C. In Texas, horses are the most popular pets besides cats and dogs, while in New Mexico, the popularity of feeding and attracting wild birds as “pets” is rising. In Arkansas, fish is the second most popular pet after Kitty and Rover.

For those with small pets, chewy’s research shows that rabbits are the most popular in 33 states, followed by ferrets in 13 states. Guinea pigs topped the list in South Dakota and Wyoming, while mice and mice were the most popular in Washington, D.C.

Why have exotic pets?

But what are these unique and sometimes exotic pets that talk to pet owners?

Amber clavette, 22, from Connecticut, grew up with a pet snake named orange. “She’s not hard to take care of,” she said. “Corn snakes are usually good for novice pet parents, but we do have to buy a lot of frozen mice, and it’s always a little disturbing that we have to thaw them in hot water before feeding them.”

In terms of maintenance, taking care of snakes is a little different from picking up dog shit or replacing cat litter. “We cleaned the tank about once a week,” clavette recalls. “We took everything out and wiped it, and someone held the snake for a while.”

Owning an exotic pet can be an adventure: clavitt remembers once that orange the corn snake figured out how to get out of a cage. After searching the house for her runaway pet, she found the snake curled up in a backpack. She also recalled that the initial reaction to the discovery of a snake was “scream and panic”. A few minutes later, however, she found it surprisingly comfortable for people to spend time with this frightening reptile.

“In any case, those who are afraid and hold her will eventually feel good for her soon,” kravit said. “I think the initial contact is more terrible, but once they realize she’s cute and won’t hurt them, people tend to calm down.”

Nicole Stanley, a manicurist from California, owns a ferret named Pluto. She adopted the ferret in a series of events. The 22-year-old girl is considered lucky.

“I’ve had her for about a year and a half,” she shared. “My friend is about to graduate and needs to relocate her. I’d be happy to take her because I’ve wanted one for so long.”

Although friends were afraid of kravitt’s snake, Stanley said people liked her ferret. From visiting friends to people who ride past Pluto with their owners, the furry animal has fans everywhere.

“The most interesting encounter I had with her was when I drove to get food,” she shared. “The people who took my order took a picture of her in my front seat with the iPad they used to take my order. She’s very likable.”
